Position Overview:

The Dean is a senior academic and administrative leader responsible for overseeing a specific academic division or faculty within a higher education institution. The Dean plays a pivotal role in shaping the academic strategy and direction of the school, promoting excellence in teaching, research, and student success. They are responsible for managing faculty, staff, and students within their department or college, as well as ensuring the alignment of the division’s goals with the institution’s mission and vision. In addition, Deans represent their academic division to both internal and external stakeholders, advocate for resources, and contribute to the development of institutional policies.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Academic Leadership and Strategy:

  • Develop and Implement Academic Vision and Strategy: Lead the development and execution of the academic strategy for the division or faculty, ensuring it aligns with the overall mission and goals of the institution. This includes setting academic priorities, curriculum development, and advancing innovative teaching methods.
  • Foster Academic Excellence: Promote and maintain high academic standards within the faculty or division. Encourage faculty and staff to engage in research, teaching, and community service that enhance the reputation and quality of the division.
  • Oversee Curriculum Development: Ensure that academic programs are relevant, innovative, and meet the needs of students, industry standards, and accreditation requirements. Support faculty in updating and enhancing curricula in response to changes in the discipline or the educational landscape.
  • Support Faculty Research and Development: Encourage and facilitate faculty research and professional development. Promote a culture of scholarly inquiry and help faculty secure funding, grants, and other resources to support research initiatives.

2. Faculty and Staff Management:

  • Recruitment and Retention of Faculty: Oversee the hiring, evaluation, and development of faculty members. Ensure that the division attracts high-quality academic staff and supports their professional growth and career development.
  • Evaluate Faculty Performance: Conduct performance evaluations for faculty members, including providing feedback on teaching effectiveness, research contributions, and service to the institution. Foster an environment of continuous improvement and professional development.
  • Mentoring and Development: Provide guidance and mentorship to faculty and staff to promote their professional growth. Support new faculty members in transitioning to their roles and provide ongoing support to ensure they succeed in their academic careers.
  • Foster Diversity and Inclusion: Ensure that the division promotes a diverse and inclusive academic environment by encouraging diverse perspectives in teaching, research, and community engagement.

3. Student Success and Engagement:

  • Promote Student Achievement: Work to improve student retention, graduation rates, and overall success by fostering an environment that supports academic achievement. Address student concerns related to academic programs, advising, and career development.
  • Support Student Affairs: Collaborate with student affairs departments to provide students with a well-rounded experience, including advising, extracurricular activities, and career services that complement their academic goals.
  • Curriculum and Program Evaluation: Regularly assess and review academic programs to ensure they are meeting student needs and educational standards. Ensure that students have access to high-quality learning experiences, including internships, research opportunities, and career services.

4. Budgeting and Resource Management:

  • Manage Division Budget: Develop and manage the budget for the division, allocating resources effectively to support academic and operational needs. Prioritize funding for key initiatives, including faculty recruitment, academic resources, and student programs.
  • Fundraising and Resource Development: Actively seek external funding opportunities, including grants, donations, and partnerships with businesses and alumni, to support academic programs and faculty research.
  • Oversee Facilities and Infrastructure: Ensure that the division has the necessary facilities, technologies, and resources to provide high-quality academic experiences for both students and faculty. Oversee the maintenance and improvement of classrooms, labs, and other academic spaces.

5. Institutional Leadership and Collaboration:

  • Collaborate with Other Deans and Administrators: Work closely with other academic leaders, including deans of other divisions, vice presidents, and senior administration, to align the goals and initiatives of the division with the broader goals of the institution.
  • Represent the Division: Serve as the principal spokesperson for the division, representing its interests to internal and external stakeholders, including faculty, students, alumni, donors, and government agencies.
  • Contribute to Institutional Planning and Policy: Participate in the development of institutional policies and long-term planning, providing input on academic affairs, strategic priorities, and institutional goals.

6. External Relations and Partnerships:

  • Build External Relationships: Establish and maintain relationships with external organizations, including businesses, governmental agencies, academic associations, and alumni, to promote the division’s programs and create new opportunities for students and faculty.
  • Enhance the Division’s Reputation: Work to enhance the national and international reputation of the division, participating in external conferences, forums, and initiatives that raise the profile of the division’s academic programs and research.

7. Accreditation and Compliance:

  • Ensure Accreditation Compliance: Lead efforts to ensure that the division’s academic programs comply with accreditation standards, including managing accreditation reviews, preparing reports, and implementing recommendations for program improvement.
  • Ensure Regulatory Compliance: Ensure that the division adheres to all relevant local, state, and federal regulations, including policies related to student privacy, accessibility, and diversity.

Qualifications:

1. Education:

  • A Doctoral degree (Ph.D., Ed.D., or equivalent) in a relevant field, with a strong academic background and expertise in the subject area of the division or faculty is typically required.
  • Additional professional certifications or leadership training in higher education administration may be preferred.

2. Experience:

  • Significant experience (typically 5-10 years) in academic administration, including experience as a department chair, academic director, or faculty member.
  • Proven leadership experience, including managing faculty, staff, and academic programs.
  • Demonstrated success in strategic planning, budget management, and resource allocation.
  • Strong track record of faculty development, academic program assessment, and enhancing student success.

3. Skills and Abilities:

  • Leadership and Vision: Strong leadership and strategic thinking skills, with the ability to develop and implement an academic vision for the division and institution.
  • Communication Skills: Excellent verbal and written communication skills for engaging with faculty, students, alumni, external stakeholders, and senior administrators.

  • Some evening and weekend hours may be required for events such as faculty meetings, student functions, or institutional functions.
