Assistant Professor

Job Overview:

An Assistant Professor is a tenure-track faculty position at a college or university, responsible for conducting research, teaching courses, and providing service to the institution. The Assistant Professor works to advance the academic mission of the institution by delivering high-quality instruction, contributing to the department’s research agenda, mentoring students, and participating in university service activities. Key Responsibilities:

  1. Teaching and Instruction:
    • Teach undergraduate and/or graduate-level courses in the subject area, ensuring high academic standards and effective pedagogy.
    • Prepare course materials, including syllabi, assignments, exams, and lectures.
    • Deliver lectures and lead discussions in a clear, engaging, and accessible manner.
    • Provide timely feedback and academic support to students.
    • Monitor student progress and academic performance, offering guidance as necessary.
    • Develop and update course content to reflect current research trends and academic standards.
    • Participate in departmental and interdisciplinary teaching efforts, such as team teaching or curriculum development.
  2. Research and Scholarly Activities:
    • Conduct original research in the field of expertise, aiming to contribute to the academic community and the advancement of knowledge.
    • Publish research findings in peer-reviewed journals, books, or other scholarly outlets.
    • Present research at academic conferences, symposia, and workshops.
    • Seek external funding opportunities (grants, fellowships) to support research activities.
    • Collaborate with colleagues within the department, across disciplines, and at other institutions on research projects.
    • Mentor and supervise graduate students and postdoctoral researchers involved in research projects.
  3. Student Mentorship and Advising:
    • Advise and mentor students on academic matters, career development, and research opportunities.
    • Supervise students’ independent study projects, theses, and dissertations.
    • Provide guidance to students seeking to pursue graduate or professional education, internships, and job opportunities.
    • Foster an inclusive and supportive learning environment where all students feel encouraged to achieve their academic goals.
  4. Service and Institutional Contributions:
    • Serve on departmental, college, or university committees, contributing to the governance and development of the institution.
    • Participate in faculty meetings, curriculum reviews, and academic planning activities.
    • Contribute to the overall mission of the department and university through service, outreach, and community involvement.
    • Engage in recruitment activities, including attending recruitment events, advising prospective students, and promoting the department and its programs.
    • Participate in departmental and university-wide initiatives, including diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts.
  5. Professional Development:
    • Engage in ongoing professional development activities to enhance teaching, research, and scholarship.
    • Stay current with the latest developments in the field through reading, attending conferences, and networking with peers.
    • Pursue opportunities for collaboration and further academic achievement, such as participating in professional organizations, seminars, and workshops.

Qualifications:

  • Education:
    • Ph.D. or terminal degree in the field (or equivalent professional experience) is required.
    • A strong academic record and expertise in the specific field of study.
  • Experience:
    • Proven experience in teaching at the college or university level, preferably as a graduate teaching assistant, adjunct instructor, or in a similar role.
    • Evidence of research productivity, including publications in peer-reviewed journals or presentations at academic conferences.
    • Experience in advising and mentoring students is preferred.
    • A demonstrated commitment to fostering an inclusive, diverse, and equitable academic environment.
  • Skills:
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
