Assistant Professor Mass Communication

Position Overview:

The Assistant Professor in Mass Communication is responsible for teaching undergraduate and/or graduate courses in the field of mass communication, journalism, media studies, or related disciplines. This role involves designing and delivering lectures, conducting research, advising students, and contributing to the academic development of the department. The Assistant Professor will also engage in scholarly research, participate in departmental activities, and collaborate with faculty and staff to enhance the quality of education in the field.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Teaching and Instruction:
    • Teach undergraduate and/or graduate-level courses in mass communication, media theory, journalism, public relations, media production, and related areas.
    • Develop and deliver high-quality, engaging lectures, discussions, and practical exercises to students.
    • Create and implement lesson plans, assignments, and projects that promote critical thinking and creativity within the subject of mass communication.
    • Incorporate multimedia, digital tools, and current media trends into teaching materials to enhance student learning.
    • Ensure a positive and engaging classroom environment where students feel comfortable expressing their ideas and questions.
  2. Curriculum Development:
    • Assist in the development and review of the department’s curriculum, ensuring that it remains current and relevant to the evolving field of mass communication.
    • Update course content to reflect emerging trends in digital media, social media, broadcasting, advertising, and journalism.
    • Contribute to the design of new courses that respond to the needs and interests of students and the field of mass communication.
  3. Student Advising and Mentorship:
    • Provide academic advising to students, guiding them in course selection, career opportunities, and research projects.
    • Offer mentorship to students interested in pursuing careers in journalism, media, public relations, or related fields.
    • Supervise student research projects, internships, and practicums, ensuring that students are gaining hands-on experience in media-related work.
  4. Research and Scholarship:
    • Engage in scholarly research in mass communication, media studies, journalism, or related fields, contributing to the advancement of knowledge in the discipline.
    • Publish research findings in peer-reviewed journals, present at academic conferences, and collaborate with other scholars in the field.
    • Seek external funding for research, if applicable, and contribute to the department’s research goals.
    • Stay current on industry trends, academic research, and media technologies to integrate new insights into teaching and research activities.
  5. Service and Community Engagement:
    • Participate in departmental meetings, faculty committees, and other academic activities that contribute to the development of the department and university.
    • Attend professional conferences, workshops, and seminars to stay up-to-date with developments in the field.
    • Contribute to the university’s outreach and public service initiatives, such as community engagement, workshops, or media training programs.
    • Serve on university committees, assisting with academic governance and curriculum decisions as required.
  6. Professional Development:
    • Participate in ongoing professional development activities, including workshops, conferences, and training, to enhance teaching skills and stay informed about advancements in mass communication and media.
    • Contribute to a collaborative and supportive academic environment by sharing knowledge and experiences with colleagues.
  7. Administrative Responsibilities:
    • Manage and grade student assignments, exams, and projects in a timely manner.
    • Maintain accurate records of student grades, attendance, and academic progress.
    • Submit reports, course syllabi, and other required documentation on time.
    • Assist with the accreditation process and ensure that the program meets institutional and industry standards.

Required Qualifications:

  • Education: A Ph.D. or terminal degree in Mass Communication, Journalism, Media Studies, Communications, or a related field. A Master’s degree may be considered with significant professional experience.
  • Experience: A minimum of 2-3 years of teaching experience at the university level is preferred, though individuals with relevant professional experience in mass communication may be considered.
  • Research and Publication: Demonstrated ability to conduct research and publish in peer-reviewed journals, or evidence of a developing research agenda.
  • Technical Skills: Proficiency in media production tools, digital platforms, and content creation software is highly preferred.
  • Pedagogical Skills: Experience in developing and delivering courses using modern teaching methods, including digital media tools, online learning platforms, and active learning strategies.
  • Communication Skills: Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to present complex ideas clearly and effectively.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Industry Experience: Professional experience in media production, journalism, public relations, advertising, or a related field.
  • Teaching Experience: Experience teaching in diverse, multicultural environments and using technology to enhance the learning experience.
  • Leadership: Evidence of leadership in academic settings, such as chairing committees, leading research projects, or mentoring students.

Work Environment:

The Assistant Professor in Mass Communication typically works in a university classroom and office setting. The position involves interaction with students, faculty, and staff. The Assistant Professor may also be involved in media labs, production environments, or community outreach activities depending on the focus of the department. Occasional travel for academic conferences, research, or professional development is expected.
