Job Overview:

A Lecturer in Health and Physical Education is responsible for teaching courses related to health, physical education, sports, fitness, and wellness. Key Responsibilities:

Teaching and Instruction:

  1. Course Delivery:
    • Teach undergraduate and graduate-level courses in subjects such as health education, physical fitness, kinesiology, exercise science, nutrition, sports psychology, and wellness.
    • Develop and deliver engaging lectures, workshops, and practical sessions that promote active learning.
    • Provide hands-on instruction in physical education settings, teaching skills related to individual and team sports, fitness training, and health-related activities.
    • Adapt teaching methods to cater to diverse learning styles, ensuring inclusivity for all students.
  2. Lesson Planning and Curriculum Development:
    • Design, implement, and update course materials, syllabi, and lesson plans in line with academic requirements and industry best practices.
    • Ensure that the curriculum includes the latest research, trends, and technological advancements in health, physical education, and fitness.
  3. Student Assessment:
    • Develop assessments such as written exams, quizzes, practical evaluations, and projects to measure student learning.
    • Provide timely and constructive feedback on students’ academic performance.
    • Track and monitor student progress, offering support as needed for students struggling with course content or practical skills.
  4. Facilitation of Physical Activities:
    • Organize and supervise physical activities, sports events, and fitness programs for students.
    • Ensure a safe and supportive environment for students to engage in physical activities, adhering to health and safety protocols.

Research and Professional Development:

  1. Conduct Research:
    • Engage in research activities focused on health, physical education, fitness, sports science, and related fields.
    • Publish research findings in peer-reviewed journals and present at academic conferences.
    • Seek research funding and collaborate with colleagues, industry partners, and external organizations on research projects.
  2. Stay Updated:
    • Continuously update knowledge in health and physical education by attending workshops, seminars, and conferences.
    • Keep abreast of new developments in fitness science, health trends, and educational technologies.

Advising and Mentoring:

  1. Student Support:
    • Advise and mentor students on academic and career pathways in health and physical education.
    • Guide students on the development of their physical fitness, personal well-being, and professional skills.
    • Provide support for students pursuing internships, volunteer work, or job placements in health and physical education fields.
  2. Career Counseling:
    • Offer guidance on career opportunities in the field, such as roles in teaching, coaching, sports administration, health promotion, and fitness training.
    • Assist students in applying for graduate programs or relevant certifications in health-related fields.

Administrative Duties:

  1. Committee Involvement:
    • Participate in departmental meetings, committees, and university-wide initiatives.

Required Qualifications:

  1. Education:
    • A Master’s degree in Health and Physical Education, Exercise Science, Kinesiology, Sports Science, or a closely related field is required. A Ph.D. in a related field is preferred for tenure-track positions.
    • Certification in physical education, fitness training, or health education may be required, depending on the institution.
  2. Experience:
    • Previous teaching experience in health and physical education at the secondary or post-secondary level is desirable.
    • Practical experience in coaching, sports management, or fitness training is beneficial.
    • Experience in conducting research or contributing to the academic development of health and physical education programs.
  3. Skills:
    • Strong knowledge of health and fitness concepts, physical education curriculum, and teaching strategies.
