Senior Student Counsellors
Job Summary:
The Senior Student Counselor provides advanced guidance and support to students, with a focus on addressing complex academic, emotional, and personal challenges. This role requires a combination of high-level counseling skills, leadership, and the ability to manage both individual cases and group-based initiatives. The Senior Student Counselor oversees the development of counseling services, supervises junior counselors, and works closely with other academic and administrative staff to ensure students’ well-being and success within the institution.
Key Responsibilities:
- Advanced Student Counseling:
- Provide high-quality, one-on-one counseling to students experiencing academic, personal, emotional, or psychological difficulties.
- Offer support to students dealing with stress, anxiety, depression, relationship issues, academic pressure, and other personal challenges.
- Employ therapeutic techniques such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), solution-focused therapy, or other evidence-based practices.
- Assist students in managing transitions, such as moving from high school to university, changing academic programs, or adjusting to personal or family challenges.
- Supervision and Mentorship:
- Supervise and mentor junior counselors or counseling interns, providing guidance, feedback, and professional development opportunities.
- Ensure junior counselors adhere to ethical guidelines, institutional policies, and best practices in student counseling.
- Assist in the training and professional development of counseling staff on new counseling approaches, mental health issues, and student support strategies.
- Crisis Intervention and Support:
- Provide immediate counseling services to students in crisis situations, including those experiencing suicidal ideation, trauma, or extreme emotional distress.
- Develop and implement crisis intervention protocols in collaboration with campus health services, security, and other relevant departments.
- Coordinate with faculty and staff to identify and support students in crisis, ensuring prompt intervention and appropriate resources are provided.
- Program Development and Implementation:
- Design and implement programs or workshops that address common student concerns, such as stress management, study skills, career readiness, and personal development.
- Collaborate with other departments to create initiatives that promote student mental health and overall well-being.
- Develop awareness campaigns on mental health, wellness, and available student support services.
- Academic and Career Counseling:
- Guide students in making informed academic decisions, such as course selection, major changes, and navigating academic difficulties.
- Provide career counseling, including guidance on job searches, internships, resume writing, and interview preparation.
- Help students set realistic goals for their academic and professional futures and provide support in achieving these goals.
- Confidentiality and Record Management:
- Maintain accurate, confidential records of counseling sessions, student progress, and case notes, adhering to legal and institutional confidentiality requirements.
- Monitor and track long-term student progress, providing ongoing support when needed and following up with students after interventions.
- Collaboration with Faculty and Administration:
- Work closely with academic staff, department heads, and university administration to address students’ academic and personal issues, ensuring a holistic approach to student support.
- Participate in interdisciplinary teams to address complex student cases or mental health issues.
- Provide consultation and guidance to faculty members regarding students who may need counseling or additional academic support.
- Assessment and Evaluation:
- Assess the effectiveness of counseling services and student programs by collecting and analyzing feedback from students and staff.
- Regularly review and update counseling practices to ensure they remain effective, relevant, and evidence-based.
- Develop reports for senior leadership on trends, student needs, and the impact of counseling services.
- Advocacy and Support for Mental Health:
- Advocate for students’ mental health needs and promote a culture of openness and support for mental health on campus.
- Educate students, staff, and faculty about mental health issues, reducing stigma and fostering a more supportive environment.
Skills and Qualifications:
- Education:
- A Master’s degree in Counseling, Psychology, Social Work, or a related field is required.
- Licensure or certification as a licensed counselor, therapist, or psychologist is typically required.
- Continuing education or certification in counseling, mental health, or therapeutic practices is often beneficial.
- Experience:
- Significant experience (usually 5+ years) in counseling, preferably in a higher education setting.
- Experience in managing and supervising a team of counselors or mental health professionals.
- Demonstrated expertise in dealing with complex student issues, including mental health challenges, academic stress, and personal crises.
- Skills:
- Excellent communication, active listening, and interpersonal skills to engage effectively with students, faculty, and staff.
- Strong crisis intervention skills and the ability to remain calm and effective in high-pressure situations.
- In-depth knowledge of counseling techniques, mental health disorders, and developmental psychology.
- Leadership and mentoring skills to guide and supervise junior counseling staff.
- Organizational and time management skills, with the ability to handle multiple cases and projects simultaneously.
- Proficiency in maintaining confidential student records and utilizing counseling management software.
