English Lecturer
Position Summary:
The English Lecturer is responsible for teaching a wide range of undergraduate and/or graduate courses related to English language, literature, and composition. This position involves delivering engaging lectures, creating relevant course materials, and fostering an environment that supports student learning and academic success. The Lecturer will also be expected to assess student work, provide feedback, and contribute to the development of curriculum in line with the department’s goals. Key Responsibilities:
- Teaching and Course Delivery:
- Design, plan, and deliver lectures on a variety of topics related to English literature, linguistics, writing, and composition, depending on the course load.
- Develop syllabi and course materials, including readings, assignments, and assessment tools, that reflect current research and trends in the field of English studies.
- Use a range of instructional techniques, including lectures, discussions, multimedia, and group projects, to enhance student learning and engagement.
- Facilitate classroom discussions, encourage critical thinking, and promote intellectual curiosity and exploration within the subject matter.
- Provide academic guidance to students through office hours, one-on-one meetings, and email communication.
- Student Assessment and Feedback:
- Create and grade assignments, essays, exams, and projects in a timely manner, ensuring that assessments align with course objectives.
- Provide constructive, clear, and timely feedback on student work to help them improve their writing and critical thinking skills.
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of student grades and progress, ensuring compliance with institutional policies regarding assessment.
- Offer academic support for students needing extra help or remediation, and work with academic advisors to develop plans for struggling students.
- Curriculum Development and Improvement:
- Contribute to the design and enhancement of the English department’s curriculum by recommending new courses, revising existing ones, and incorporating innovative teaching methods.
- Stay current with trends in literature, linguistics, and pedagogical strategies in order to incorporate modern approaches into course design and delivery.
- Collaborate with colleagues to ensure a cohesive and comprehensive curriculum that meets the needs of students at various academic levels.
- Research and Professional Development:
- Engage in scholarly activities that contribute to professional growth in the field of English studies, such as attending conferences, publishing research, or participating in relevant workshops.
- Share insights and findings from research with students and colleagues to enrich the educational environment.
- Participate in departmental meetings, faculty development programs, and other professional activities to contribute to the intellectual life of the institution.
- Student Support and Engagement:
- Mentor and advise students on academic, career, and personal matters when appropriate, helping them navigate their educational experience.
- Create a supportive classroom environment that encourages participation, fosters intellectual inquiry, and is inclusive of diverse perspectives.
- Foster a positive and respectful relationship with students by being approachable, responsive, and empathetic to their academic needs.
- Administrative and Faculty Responsibilities:
- Participate in departmental and institutional committees or tasks as required by the university, contributing to the development of school policies, academic programs, or community outreach initiatives.
- Attend faculty meetings and contribute to discussions on department goals, curriculum, and student success.
- Comply with institutional regulations, including submitting grades, attending meetings, and following faculty guidelines.
Qualifications:
- Education:
- A Master’s degree in English, English Literature, Linguistics, or a closely related field is required. A Ph.D. in English or a related field may be preferred for higher-level teaching or for tenure-track positions.
- Experience:
- Previous teaching experience at the undergraduate or graduate level is preferred but not required.
- Demonstrated expertise in one or more areas of English, such as literature (e.g., British, American, or World literature), writing and composition, linguistics, or cultural studies.
- Skills:
- Strong communication skills, with the ability to explain complex concepts clearly and in a way that engages students.
- Familiarity with various teaching methods and technologies, including online teaching platforms, learning management systems (LMS), and multimedia resources.
- Ability to design and implement assessments that effectively evaluate student understanding.
- Organizational skills to manage multiple classes, assignments, and student evaluations.
- Ability to collaborate with colleagues and contribute to a collegial academic environment.
