Assistant Professor

Position Summary:
The Assistant Professor is an early-career faculty member at a university or college, responsible for teaching undergraduate and/or graduate courses, conducting research, and contributing to the academic and administrative functions of the department. This position provides an opportunity for professional development and growth, with an emphasis on teaching excellence, scholarly activity, and service to the university community. The Assistant Professor will be expected to engage in high-quality research, publish work in peer-reviewed journals, and participate in departmental and university service.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Teaching and Instruction:
    • Teach undergraduate and/or graduate courses in the subject area, using a variety of instructional methods to engage students and enhance learning.
    • Develop syllabi, course materials, and assessments that align with the department’s curriculum and academic standards.
    • Provide clear, constructive feedback on student assignments, exams, and projects.
    • Maintain regular office hours for student advising, academic support, and consultation.
    • Foster an inclusive and dynamic classroom environment that promotes critical thinking, student engagement, and intellectual curiosity.
  2. Research and Scholarly Activity:
    • Conduct original research in the academic field, contributing new knowledge and advancing the discipline.
    • Publish research findings in peer-reviewed journals, books, or conference proceedings.
    • Apply for research grants or funding opportunities to support research projects and initiatives.
    • Collaborate with other faculty members and external researchers on interdisciplinary research initiatives.
    • Present research at academic conferences, workshops, and other scholarly events to disseminate findings and engage with the academic community.
  3. Service to the University and Department:
    • Participate in departmental meetings, faculty committees, and other governance activities.
    • Contribute to the development and improvement of the department’s curriculum and academic programs.
    • Engage in student advising and mentorship, supporting students in their academic and professional development.
    • Assist with the recruitment of new students and faculty, as well as other outreach activities related to the department.
    • Provide academic leadership and guidance within the department and contribute to a collaborative and collegial environment.
  4. Professional Development and Growth:
    • Stay current with trends, research, and best practices in the discipline through continued education, professional development, and involvement in relevant academic associations.
    • Seek out opportunities for career advancement, including pursuing tenure, leadership roles, or higher-level teaching opportunities.
    • Engage in ongoing professional development activities, such as attending conferences, workshops, or courses that contribute to teaching excellence and scholarly activity.
  5. Administrative and Other Duties:
    • Participate in departmental and university-wide initiatives, special projects, and task forces.
    • Provide service to the broader academic community, such as reviewing for academic journals, organizing conferences, or participating in professional organizations.
    • Ensure timely and accurate submission of course grades, reports, and other administrative responsibilities as required by the department and institution.
    • Adhere to university policies and ethical guidelines, promoting a positive and respectful environment for students, colleagues, and staff.

Qualifications:

  • Education:
    • A Ph.D. or equivalent terminal degree in the relevant field is required.
    • For certain disciplines or specialized programs, a Master’s degree or professional qualifications may be acceptable.
  • Experience:
    • A demonstrated record of academic excellence in teaching and research is preferred.
    • Experience in higher education teaching, either through teaching assistantships, adjunct positions, or postdoctoral appointments, is highly desirable.
    • A strong research agenda with the potential for future publication and funding is essential.
  • Skills:
    • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to effectively present complex ideas to students and colleagues.
    • Ability to design and deliver effective, student-centered courses that promote active learning and critical thinking.
    • Organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple responsibilities, including teaching, research, and service commitments.
    • Proficiency with academic technologies, including Learning Management Systems (LMS), online teaching tools, and research software.
