LECTURER PHYSICAL EDUCATION

Position Summary:
The Lecturer in Physical Education is responsible for teaching undergraduate and/or graduate courses related to physical education, sports science, and health and wellness. This position requires a strong background in physical education theory and practice, with an emphasis on promoting physical fitness, sportsmanship, and lifelong healthy behaviors. The lecturer will design and deliver engaging courses, assess student performance, and contribute to the development of the curriculum. Additionally, the role includes conducting research and contributing to the academic and professional development of the department.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Teaching and Course Delivery:
    • Design, plan, and deliver undergraduate and/or graduate courses in physical education, sports science, fitness, health education, or related subjects.
    • Develop course syllabi, materials, and assessments that are aligned with the department’s academic standards and goals.
    • Employ various teaching methods, including lectures, practical demonstrations, hands-on activities, and online resources, to enhance student learning and engagement.
    • Facilitate physical activities, sports, and fitness sessions, ensuring that students acquire both theoretical knowledge and practical skills.
    • Create an inclusive learning environment that accommodates diverse learning styles and promotes active participation.
    • Organize and lead extracurricular activities such as sports clubs, fitness programs, or field trips that align with the course content.
  2. Student Assessment and Feedback:
    • Design and grade assessments, including written exams, lab reports, presentations, and practical evaluations, in a timely and fair manner.
    • Provide constructive feedback on assignments, projects, and performances to help students improve their physical skills and understanding of the material.
    • Maintain accurate records of student performance, including grades, attendance, and progress.
    • Hold office hours to support students, answer questions, and provide academic guidance and mentoring.
  3. Curriculum Development and Improvement:
    • Contribute to the ongoing development and improvement of the physical education curriculum to ensure that it meets academic standards and incorporates the latest research and trends in physical activity and sports science.
    • Collaborate with colleagues to update course materials, teaching methods, and assessment strategies.
    • Ensure that the curriculum includes a balance of theory, practice, and application in areas such as physical fitness, sports techniques, nutrition, and injury prevention.
  4. Research and Scholarly Activity:
    • Engage in research activities in the field of physical education, sports science, or related areas, contributing to the body of knowledge in the field.
    • Publish research findings in academic journals, present at conferences, and contribute to professional organizations.
    • Incorporate research findings into course materials and lectures to provide students with the latest knowledge and developments in the field.
    • Seek out funding or grants to support research projects, student scholarships, or program development.
  5. Service to the Department and Institution:
    • Participate in departmental meetings, faculty committees, and school-wide activities as needed.
    • Contribute to the development and implementation of departmental policies, goals, and strategic plans.
    • Assist with student recruitment and outreach, promoting the physical education program to prospective students.
    • Attend professional development opportunities, such as conferences or workshops, to stay current in the field and enhance teaching practices.
  6. Health, Safety, and Wellness:
    • Ensure that all physical activities are conducted in a safe manner and that students are educated on health and safety guidelines.
    • Educate students about injury prevention, proper warm-ups, cool-downs, and stretching techniques.
    • Promote physical and mental wellness among students, encouraging balanced, healthy lifestyles.
    • Implement and maintain safety protocols for all physical activities and sports programs.
  7. Student Engagement and Mentorship:
    • Foster a positive and supportive learning environment that encourages student engagement and development.
    • Mentor and advise students in their academic journey, providing guidance on career paths, internships, and further study opportunities.
    • Act as a role model for students by demonstrating a commitment to physical health, wellness, and professional conduct.

Qualifications:

  • Education:
    • A Master’s degree in Physical Education, Sports Science, Exercise Science, Health and Wellness, or a related field is required. A Ph.D. may be preferred for teaching at the graduate level or for tenure-track positions.
  • Experience:
    • Previous experience in teaching physical education at the postsecondary level, or in a related area (e.g., coaching, fitness training, health education), is preferred.
    • Experience working in a physical education or sports-related environment is highly desirable.
  • Skills:
    • Strong communication and presentation skills, with the ability to explain complex concepts clearly and engagingly.
    • Proficiency in using instructional technology, including learning management systems (LMS), online platforms, and multimedia resources.
    • Ability to design and implement practical, hands-on activities and demonstrations that complement theoretical learning.
    • Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple courses, student assessments, and administrative tasks.
    • Knowledge of current trends in physical education, sports science, and wellness.
