Student Counselor

Job Summary:

We are seeking a compassionate and skilled Student Counselor to join our Student Services team. The successful candidate will provide counseling and support to students dealing with academic, personal, emotional, or social challenges. The Student Counselor will create a safe and supportive environment to help students manage their well-being, succeed academically, and develop life skills. This position involves individual counseling, group sessions, workshops, and crisis intervention as needed.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Individual Counseling:

    • Provide confidential one-on-one counseling services to students dealing with academic stress, anxiety, depression, relationship issues, personal challenges, and other emotional difficulties.
    • Help students develop coping strategies, improve problem-solving skills, and enhance emotional resilience.
    • Work with students to set personal and academic goals and provide ongoing support to help them achieve those goals.
    • Provide referrals to external professionals or mental health services when necessary.
  2. Group Counseling and Workshops:

    • Organize and lead group counseling sessions on topics such as stress management, time management, study skills, emotional intelligence, and mental health awareness.
    • Develop and facilitate workshops or seminars to educate students on mental health, personal development, conflict resolution, and other life skills.
    • Foster peer support groups to help students connect and share experiences.
  3. Crisis Intervention:

    • Offer immediate support and intervention during student crises, including emotional distress, suicidal thoughts, or other emergencies.
    • Work with university staff, faculty, and local authorities to ensure student safety and well-being during crises.
    • Follow institutional protocols for crisis management, including emergency referrals to appropriate medical or psychological services.
  4. Academic Counseling and Support:

    • Provide academic counseling for students struggling with study habits, time management, academic motivation, and test anxiety.
    • Assist students with the transition into higher education, supporting them in adjusting to academic expectations and university life.
    • Collaborate with faculty and academic advisors to ensure that students are receiving the necessary academic support.
  5. Developing Support Resources:

    • Develop and implement programs or resources to promote mental health and wellness on campus, including wellness initiatives, self-care strategies, and academic success programs.
    • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of campus resources and student services, referring students to additional support as needed.
    • Provide educational materials on topics such as mental health, coping strategies, and self-care.
  6. Confidentiality and Record Keeping:

    • Maintain confidential records of counseling sessions, progress reports, and referrals in accordance with institutional and legal guidelines.
    • Prepare reports and assessments to track student progress and the effectiveness of counseling services.
  7. Collaboration and Advocacy:

    • Work closely with faculty, staff, and administrators to create a supportive environment for students.
    • Advocate for student well-being within the institution and participate in committees related to student services, wellness, and mental health initiatives.
    • Participate in training and professional development to stay informed about the latest counseling techniques, mental health issues, and student support strategies.

Key Requirements:

  1. Education and Qualifications:

    • A Master’s degree in Counseling, Psychology, Social Work, or a related field.
    • Relevant certification or licensure in counseling or psychotherapy (e.g., LPC, LCSW, or equivalent) is required.
    • Specialized training in crisis intervention, mental health counseling, or substance abuse counseling is a plus.
  2. Experience:

    • Previous experience as a counselor or therapist, preferably in a university or educational setting.
    • Experience working with diverse student populations and understanding the challenges they face.
    • Familiarity with developmental issues faced by students in higher education, such as academic pressure, social adjustment, career planning, and personal growth.
  3. Skills and Abilities:

    • Excellent counseling, listening, and interpersonal skills.
    • Ability to work with students from diverse backgrounds and maintain a non-judgmental, empathetic approach.
    • Strong knowledge of mental health issues, stress management, coping strategies, and counseling techniques.
    • Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information appropriately.
    • Strong problem-solving and crisis management skills.
    • Proficient in using counseling software, online resources, and maintaining accurate records.
