Assistant Librarian
Job Summary:
An Assistant Librarian provides support in the management and delivery of library services, including collection development, cataloging, research assistance, and outreach. This role involves working collaboratively with library staff, faculty, and students to promote information literacy and support academic success.
Key Responsibilities:
Collection Development
1. Assist in the selection, acquisition, and maintenance of library materials.
2. Evaluate and weed library collections to ensure relevance and currency.
3. Collaborate with faculty to develop collections that support curriculum needs.
Cataloging and Classification
1. Perform original and copy cataloging for library materials.
2. Apply classification systems, such as Dewey or LC, to ensure accurate shelving.
3. Maintain accurate and up-to-date bibliographic records.
Research Assistance
1. Provide research assistance to students, faculty, and staff.
2. Develop and teach information literacy instruction sessions.
3. Collaborate with faculty to integrate information literacy into the curriculum.
Outreach and Engagement
1. Participate in outreach and engagement activities to promote library services.
2. Collaborate with student organizations and campus departments to develop library programs.
3. Develop and maintain relationships with faculty and students to promote library services.
Technical Services
1. Assist in the maintenance and troubleshooting of library systems and equipment.
2. Participate in the development and implementation of library technology initiatives.
Requirements:
1. Master’s Degree in Library Science: A Master’s degree in Library Science (MLS) or Library and Information Science (MLIS) from an ALA-accredited program.
2. Experience in Library Services: Experience in library services, including collection development, cataloging, and research assistance.
3. Strong Communication and Interpersonal Skills: Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
4. Technical Skills: Proficiency in library software and technology, including integrated library systems and online databases.
Preferred Qualifications:
1. Second Master’s Degree or Ph.D.: A second Master’s degree or Ph.D. in a related field.
2. Specialized Certification: Specialized certification in library and information science, such as the Certified Public Library Administrator (CPLA) or the Library Support Staff Certification (LSSC).
3. Experience with Emerging Technologies: Experience with emerging technologies, such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, or data analytics.
4. Bilingual or Multilingual: Ability to communicate in multiple languages.
