Special Education teacher
Job Summary:
The Special Education Teacher is responsible for providing individualized and group instruction to students with a variety of special educational needs, including learning disabilities, physical disabilities, emotional and behavioral challenges, or developmental delays. The role involves developing tailored lesson plans, adapting teaching methods to meet students’ needs, and working closely with other educators, parents, and specialists to create a supportive, inclusive, and effective learning environment.
The ideal candidate will be compassionate, patient, and dedicated to ensuring that every student receives the support they need to succeed academically, socially, and emotionally.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Instruction and Lesson Planning:

Develop and deliver individualized education programs (IEPs) for students with special educational needs, in collaboration with parents, counselors, and other educational professionals.

Adapt and modify the general education curriculum to meet the specific needs of students with disabilities.

Use various instructional techniques and tools to ensure students can access the curriculum and meet learning objectives.

Provide one-on-one or small group instruction, focusing on specific academic skills such as reading, writing, math, and life skills.

Employ assistive technologies or adaptive equipment to enhance student learning and engagement.
2. Student Assessment and Monitoring:

Regularly assess student progress through formal and informal assessments, including quizzes, tests, and observations.

Document and track student performance, and update IEPs to reflect progress and changing needs.

Provide constructive feedback to students, offering guidance on how they can improve and build on their strengths.

Communicate regularly with parents and guardians regarding student progress, goals, and strategies for home support.
3. Classroom Management:

Create and maintain a positive, structured, and respectful classroom environment that encourages learning and personal development.

Implement individualized behavior management strategies to support students’ emotional and behavioral needs.

Work with students to build social and emotional skills, focusing on self-regulation, communication, and conflict resolution.

Maintain a safe and inclusive environment that values diversity and promotes mutual respect.
4. Collaboration and Support:

Work closely with general education teachers, counselors, speech therapists, occupational therapists, and other specialists to ensure an integrated approach to student learning.

Collaborate with other staff to develop and implement appropriate accommodations, modifications, and interventions for students.

Participate in team meetings, IEP meetings, and other school-based planning sessions to discuss student progress and adjust strategies as necessary.

Provide support and guidance to other teachers and staff in understanding and accommodating students with special needs.
5. Professional Development and Training:

Stay updated on the latest research, best practices, and teaching strategies related to special education.

Participate in ongoing professional development opportunities, including workshops, seminars, and training sessions.

Share insights and experiences with colleagues to help build a stronger, more effective special education program.
6. Administrative Duties:

Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of student progress, including assessment results, IEP documentation, and behavioral reports.

Comply with all local, state, and federal regulations related to special education services, including meeting deadlines for IEPs, progress reports, and other required documentation.

Prepare and submit reports on student progress to parents, administrators, and relevant agencies as required.

Handle any administrative tasks related to the special education department, including scheduling meetings and coordinating services.
Qualifications:
Required:

Education: A bachelor’s degree in Special Education, or a related field. A master’s degree in Special Education is preferred.

Certification: Valid state certification in Special Education (or eligibility for certification) for the appropriate grade level(s).

Experience: Previous experience working with students with special needs is preferred, but not always required for entry-level positions.

Strong understanding of different disabilities and learning challenges.

Ability to adapt teaching methods and materials to meet the diverse needs of students.

Knowledge of special education laws, regulations, and best practices.

Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, to effectively collaborate with parents, colleagues, and other professionals.

Familiarity with assistive technology and educational tools that support special education.

Preferred:

Experience working with students in a variety of special education settings (e.g., inclusion, self-contained, resource rooms).

Knowledge of behavior intervention strategies and emotional support techniques.

Proficiency in using educational technology and tools designed for students with special needs.

Experience in writing or updating IEPs, conducting assessments, and working with families to implement learning plans.
Work Environment:

The Special Education Teacher works in a classroom setting, with students of varying ages, abilities, and disabilities.

The role may require working with students both in the classroom and in other school settings, such as specialized resource rooms or therapy areas.

The job may involve some physical activity, such as assisting students with mobility or other physical needs.

There may be some after-school or weekend hours required for meetings, training, or extracurricular activities.
