Chief Librarian

Position Overview:
The Chief Librarian is the head of the library department, responsible for managing library operations, developing resources, and providing leadership to library staff. This role ensures the efficient organization, accessibility, and preservation of library collections while supporting the academic, research, and informational needs of the institution’s community.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversee the daily operations of the library, including acquisitions, cataloging, circulation, and reference services.

  • Develop and implement library policies, procedures, and strategic plans aligned with institutional goals.

  • Manage and supervise library staff, including recruitment, training, and performance evaluation.

  • Ensure the maintenance, organization, and preservation of physical and digital collections.

  • Coordinate the acquisition and integration of new resources such as books, journals, databases, and digital media.

  • Facilitate user education programs, workshops, and information literacy sessions for students, faculty, and staff.

  • Collaborate with academic departments to support curriculum and research needs.

  • Manage library budgets, procurement processes, and vendor relationships.

  • Promote the use of technology and digital resources to enhance access and services.

  • Ensure compliance with copyright laws and intellectual property rights.

  • Represent the library in institutional committees and external professional forums.

Skills and Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Library Science (MLS/MLIS) or equivalent from an accredited institution.

  • Extensive experience in library management and leadership roles.

  • Strong knowledge of cataloging standards, classification systems (e.g., Dewey, Library of Congress), and digital library technologies.

  • Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.

  • Proficiency with library management software and digital resource platforms.

  • Ability to lead teams, manage budgets, and handle multiple projects.

  • Commitment to user-centered service and lifelong learning.
