Assistant Professor

Job Overview:

An Assistant Professor is responsible for teaching courses, conducting original research, publishing scholarly work, and contributing to the academic community. They work towards achieving tenure, a permanent academic position, by demonstrating excellence in teaching, research, and service to the institution.

Key Responsibilities:
  1. Teaching and Instruction:
    • Teach Courses: Deliver lectures, seminars, or laboratory sessions at the undergraduate and/or graduate level within their academic department.
    • Course Development: Design, develop, and update course syllabi and materials that align with the curriculum.
    • Student Evaluation: Grade assignments, exams, and projects, providing constructive feedback to help students improve.
    • Advising: Mentor students on academic and career matters, provide guidance on research projects, and offer advice on course selection and professional development.
  2. Research and Scholarly Activity:
    • Conduct Research: Engage in independent or collaborative research within their area of expertise, contributing to the advancement of knowledge in their field.
    • Publish Work: Write and publish research papers, articles, or books in peer-reviewed journals or other academic outlets.
    • Seek Funding: Apply for research grants and other funding opportunities to support research activities and projects.
    • Present Findings: Share research outcomes at academic conferences, workshops, or symposia.
  3. Service to the Institution:
    • Committee Participation: Serve on academic and administrative committees within the department or institution.
    • Professional Service: Engage in academic service by reviewing papers for journals, organizing events, or contributing to professional organizations.
    • Departmental Support: Assist in departmental activities such as curriculum development, student recruitment, and faculty development programs.
  4. Academic Advising:

Skills and Qualifications:
  • Educational Background:
    • A Ph.D. or terminal degree in the relevant field of study is typically required (exceptions may apply in certain professional fields).
    • Specialized knowledge and expertise in a specific academic discipline.
  • Experience:
    • Prior teaching experience is often preferred but not always required.
