Job Summary:

The Biomedical Engineer is responsible for designing, developing, testing, and maintaining medical devices, equipment, and systems that enhance patient care and improve healthcare outcomes. This role combines engineering principles with medical and biological sciences to create solutions that meet the specific needs of healthcare professionals and patients. The Biomedical Engineer works closely with clinicians, manufacturers, and regulatory bodies to ensure products meet safety standards and function optimally.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Design and Development:

    • Design, develop, and improve medical devices, equipment, and systems for healthcare applications.
    • Work on product prototypes, from concept through testing, development, and final production.
    • Ensure that designs meet the necessary standards, regulations, and safety requirements (e.g., FDA regulations).
    • Conduct feasibility studies and risk analyses to evaluate design effectiveness.
  2. Testing and Evaluation:

    • Develop and conduct tests on new devices or prototypes to assess their functionality, safety, and performance.
    • Analyze test data and make necessary adjustments to improve the product.
    • Coordinate and oversee clinical trials or pilot programs for new medical equipment and systems.
    • Troubleshoot and resolve issues related to device functionality or patient outcomes.
  3. Regulatory Compliance and Quality Assurance:

    • Ensure compliance with all relevant regulatory and legal requirements, including FDA, CE, ISO, and other standards.
    • Document designs, testing procedures, and results in accordance with regulatory standards.
    • Collaborate with regulatory agencies to obtain necessary approvals for medical devices.
    • Implement and maintain quality control measures throughout the product life cycle to ensure consistency and performance.
  4. Collaboration with Healthcare Professionals:

    • Work closely with clinicians, medical staff, and healthcare professionals to understand their needs and requirements for medical devices.
    • Collect feedback on device performance from healthcare providers and patients to improve products.
    • Provide training to medical staff on the safe and effective use of medical equipment.
    • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to integrate new technology into existing healthcare systems.
  5. Maintenance and Support:

    • Ensure the proper functioning and maintenance of biomedical equipment and systems in healthcare facilities.
    • Develop maintenance procedures and schedules for healthcare providers to ensure the longevity of medical devices.
    • Provide troubleshooting support and technical assistance for hospitals, clinics, and other healthcare settings.
    • Assist with the repair and modification of malfunctioning or outdated medical equipment.
  6. Research and Innovation:

    • Stay up to date with the latest technological advancements in biomedical engineering and healthcare.
    • Conduct research and collaborate with other engineers and scientists to improve existing products or create new innovations.
    • Investigate new materials, technologies, and techniques for use in the development of biomedical devices.

Qualifications and Skills:

  • Education:

    • A Bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field (required).
    • A Master’s degree or higher in Biomedical Engineering (preferred).
  • Experience:

    • Previous experience in the biomedical engineering field, including experience with medical device design, testing, or maintenance.
    • Familiarity with regulatory requirements such as FDA, ISO 13485, and CE marking.
    • Hands-on experience with medical equipment or systems, including design, testing, and troubleshooting.
  • Skills:

    • Strong understanding of engineering principles and their application in healthcare settings.
    • Knowledge of medical device design, materials, and production processes.
    • Proficiency with engineering software (e.g., AutoCAD, MATLAB, SolidWorks, etc.) for design and simulation.
    • Familiarity with testing protocols, risk management, and validation techniques for medical devices.
    • Excellent problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and analytical thinking.
    • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, capable of working with cross-functional teams.
