Chief Librarian

Job Summary:

We are seeking an experienced and visionary leader to serve as our Chief Librarian. The successful candidate will be responsible for leading the library’s strategic planning, budgeting, and operations, as well as fostering a culture of innovation, collaboration, and excellence.

Key Responsibilities:

Strategic Leadership:

– Develop and implement a strategic plan for the library that aligns with the institution’s goals and objectives.
– Provide vision and leadership for the library, fostering a culture of innovation, collaboration, and excellence.
– Build and maintain relationships with key stakeholders, including faculty, students, administrators, and community partners.

Collection Development and Management:

– Oversee the development and maintenance of the library’s collections, including print, digital, and other formats.
– Ensure that the library’s collections are relevant, diverse, and meet the needs of the institution’s students, faculty, and staff.

User Services:

– Provide leadership for the library’s user services, including reference, instruction, and circulation.
– Ensure that the library provides excellent customer service, responding to the needs of students, faculty, and staff.

Technology and Digital Initiatives:

– Oversee the library’s technology infrastructure, including the library’s website, online catalog, and digital repositories.
– Develop and implement digital initiatives that support the library’s mission and goals.

Budgeting and Financial Management:

– Develop and manage the library’s budget, ensuring that resources are allocated effectively and efficiently.
– Ensure that the library operates within its budget, making adjustments as necessary.

Personnel Management:

– Supervise and evaluate library staff, providing coaching, mentoring, and professional development opportunities.
– Foster a positive and inclusive work environment, promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Requirements:

Qualifications:

– Master’s degree in Library Science (MLS) or a related field.
– Minimum 5-7 years of experience in a library leadership role, preferably in an academic library.
– Proven track record of success in leading library strategic planning, budgeting, and operations.

Skills:

– Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
– Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
– Ability to think strategically and make data-informed decisions.
– Experience with budget management and financial planning.

Knowledge:

– Strong knowledge of library operations, including collection development, user services, and technology infrastructure.
– Understanding of trends and issues in academic librarianship.
– Familiarity with digital initiatives and technologies.

Desired Qualifications:

– Experience with accreditation processes and assessment.
– Familiarity with diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives.
– Experience with grant writing and fundraising.
