Elementary School Teacher (EST)
Job Overview:
An Elementary School Teacher is responsible for fostering a love of learning and supporting the academic, social, emotional, and behavioral development of young students in grades K-5. The teacher is a key member of the school community, working with colleagues, parents, and other educational professionals to ensure each student achieves their full potential. The teacher’s primary focus is to provide engaging, inclusive, and age-appropriate lessons that build foundational skills in core subjects while creating a positive and nurturing classroom environment.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Curriculum Development and Instruction:
- Lesson Planning and Delivery:
- Develop and implement lesson plans that align with the state or national curriculum standards. Create engaging and creative activities that cater to the learning needs and developmental stages of elementary-aged children.
- Teach subjects such as Mathematics, Reading, Writing, Science, Social Studies, and sometimes Art, Music, and Physical Education, depending on the school’s structure.
- Utilize a variety of instructional techniques, including hands-on activities, cooperative learning, technology integration, storytelling, and visual aids to engage students.
- Adapt lessons and teaching methods for students with various learning styles, including English Language Learners (ELL), students with disabilities, and gifted students.
- Classroom Environment:
- Create a warm, safe, and stimulating classroom that is conducive to learning. Arrange classroom furniture and materials in a way that maximizes interaction and ensures that students feel respected and valued.
- Develop classroom routines, procedures, and expectations that promote structure, responsibility, and positive behavior.
2. Student Engagement and Support:
- Building Relationships:
- Foster positive relationships with students by showing care, empathy, and respect for their individuality and diverse backgrounds. Establish trust with students and encourage open communication.
- Provide emotional support to students and guide them in developing social skills, self-regulation, and problem-solving strategies. Support students with special needs, as required.
- Encouragement and Motivation:
- Use positive reinforcement and praise to motivate students and celebrate their successes. Foster a growth mindset by encouraging students to embrace challenges and learn from mistakes.
- Recognize and celebrate individual and group achievements in both academic and social contexts.
3. Assessment and Evaluation:
- Monitoring Progress:
- Continuously assess student progress using a variety of assessment tools, including quizzes, tests, essays, projects, presentations, and observational assessments.
- Use formative and summative assessments to evaluate students’ academic growth and identify areas for improvement.
- Differentiation:
- Provide differentiated instruction based on student needs. Adjust lessons, assignments, and assessments to support struggling students while offering enrichment opportunities to advanced learners.
- Implement and track Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) for students with special educational needs, ensuring they receive the necessary accommodations and support.
- Reporting and Communication:
- Maintain detailed records of student performance and behavior. Provide regular feedback to students about their progress.
- Prepare detailed progress reports for parents and participate in parent-teacher conferences to discuss student performance, challenges, and goals.
- Communicate effectively with parents and guardians regarding their child’s academic progress, behavior, and other school-related concerns.
4. Classroom Management:
- Establish Expectations:
- Establish clear, consistent rules and expectations for student behavior. Develop a positive discipline system that encourages respect and responsibility.
- Teach students appropriate behaviors and social skills, fostering a supportive and inclusive classroom atmosphere.
- Behavioral Support:
- Address behavioral issues in a proactive and constructive manner, using conflict resolution strategies and restorative practices.
- Maintain a calm and professional demeanor in challenging situations and work collaboratively with other staff, such as counselors and administrators, when necessary.
5. Collaboration and Teamwork:
- Working with Colleagues:
- Collaborate with other teachers, administrators, and staff to plan school activities, cross-curricular projects, and support school-wide initiatives.
- Share best practices with colleagues, engage in peer observations, and participate in team meetings to ensure a cohesive and effective learning environment for all students.
- School Community Engagement:
- Actively participate in school events such as field trips, assemblies, and extracurricular activities. Attend staff meetings and professional development sessions.
- Partner with parents and guardians to promote students’ learning and well-being. Engage with the broader school community through parent-volunteer opportunities, school fundraisers, and special projects.
6. Professional Development:
- Continuing Education:
- Stay current with educational research, new teaching strategies, and emerging technology to enhance classroom instruction. Participate in professional development opportunities, workshops, conferences, and seminars.
- Reflect on personal teaching practices, identify areas for improvement, and set professional goals for growth.
7. Administrative and Organizational Duties:
- Record Keeping:
- Keep accurate records of student attendance, grades, and behavior, ensuring that all documentation is up to date.
- Prepare and submit reports as required by school administration, including lesson plans, progress reports, and incident reports.
- Resource Management:
- Manage classroom supplies and materials, ensuring that students have the tools needed for learning activities. Use resources efficiently and plan ahead for the acquisition of new materials.
8. Special Responsibilities:
- Supervision:
- Supervise students during recess, lunch breaks, and transitions, ensuring their safety and well-being.
- Monitor students during field trips and extracurricular activities.
- Cultural Sensitivity and Inclusion:
- Promote an inclusive classroom where all students feel valued and respected, regardless of their race, ethnicity, religion, gender, or background.
- Foster cultural awareness and global perspectives by integrating diverse perspectives into lessons and activities.
Qualifications:
- Educational Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education or a related field (required).
- State certification for teaching elementary grades (K-5), including necessary exams (e.g., Praxis) and background checks.
- Additional certifications or endorsements may be required, such as Special Education or ESL endorsements.
- Experience:
- Previous experience in an educational setting, particularly working with children in elementary grades, is preferred (e.g., student teaching, teaching assistant roles).
- Experience with differentiated instruction, classroom management, and the use of educational technology.
- Skills and Competencies:
- Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, to effectively interact with students, parents, and colleagues.
- Ability to create an organized, stimulating, and inclusive learning environment.
- Proficiency in the use of educational technology, including learning management systems (LMS), multimedia tools, and interactive whiteboards.

Working Conditions:
- Location: Elementary school classroom, with occasional work in other school areas (e.g., library, playground, gym).
- Schedule: Full-time, typically Monday through Friday during regular school hours. Occasional evening or weekend hours may be required for parent-teacher conferences, school events, or planning.
