Job Overview:
A Lecturer in Health and Physical Education is an academic professional responsible for teaching and developing courses related to health, wellness, physical fitness, and physical education in a college or university setting. This role involves educating students on the principles of physical health, fitness, nutrition, and the importance of maintaining a balanced and healthy lifestyle. The lecturer also participates in curriculum development, research activities, and student support initiatives to promote physical education and health education at higher education institutions.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Teaching & Course Delivery:

    • Teach undergraduate and/or graduate courses in Health and Physical Education, covering topics such as exercise science, nutrition, health promotion, physical fitness, anatomy, and sports management.

    • Deliver engaging lectures, practical demonstrations, and discussions to enhance students’ learning experiences.

    • Assess and grade students’ assignments, projects, and exams in accordance with university standards and guidelines.

  2. Curriculum Development & Design:

    • Develop and update course materials, including syllabi, reading lists, and instructional resources.

    • Design and implement assessments and evaluation strategies to gauge student performance and learning outcomes.

    • Integrate innovative teaching methods, such as technology-assisted learning, case studies, and real-world applications, to engage students and enhance learning.

  3. Student Support & Advising:

    • Provide academic advising to students on course selection, career pathways, and professional development in health and physical education.

    • Offer additional support to students who may need help understanding course material or completing assignments.

    • Mentor and guide students in their academic and professional pursuits, especially those interested in pursuing careers in physical education, sports science, or health promotion.

  4. Research & Scholarship:

    • Conduct research in areas related to Health and Physical Education, contributing to the advancement of knowledge in the field.

    • Publish research findings in academic journals, attend conferences, and collaborate with colleagues and professionals in the field.

    • Integrate recent research findings and best practices into course content and teaching methodologies to ensure students receive up-to-date and relevant knowledge.

  5. Professional Development:

    • Stay current with trends, developments, and innovations in the field of Health and Physical Education by attending professional development opportunities such as workshops, conferences, and seminars.

    • Continuously improve teaching practices and academic contributions through self-reflection, feedback, and engagement with scholarly communities.

  6. Collaboration with Colleagues:

    • Collaborate with fellow faculty members to ensure the Health and Physical Education program is cohesive, relevant, and effective in meeting students’ learning goals.

    • Contribute to department meetings, curriculum development, and departmental activities.

  7. Community Engagement & Outreach:

    • Develop community outreach programs and initiatives that promote health and physical education in the wider community.

    • Engage in school or public health campaigns, workshops, or programs that encourage physical activity, fitness, and wellness.

  8. Administrative Duties:

    • Participate in departmental meetings, faculty committees, and university events.

    • Assist with the planning and organization of physical education-related activities such as sports events, health fairs, and wellness programs.

    • Keep accurate records of students’ academic progress and submit necessary documentation as required by university policies.

Qualifications:

  • Education: A Master’s degree (minimum) in Health and Physical Education, Exercise Science, Sports Science, or a related field. A Doctorate (PhD or EdD) is preferred, especially for senior lecturer positions or research-focused roles.

  • Experience: At least 2-3 years of teaching experience in Health and Physical Education at the secondary or post-secondary level, or significant experience in the field of health, fitness, or sports management.

  • Skills:

    • Strong knowledge of health, physical fitness, and sports science concepts.

    • Excellent teaching, communication, and presentation skills.

    • Ability to motivate and engage students in both theoretical and practical aspects of health and physical education.

    • Research skills and the ability to contribute to academic scholarship.

    • Strong organizational and time-management skills.

    • Proficiency with educational technology and tools used in higher education.

Certifications (Optional but preferred):

  • Certified fitness trainer (e.g., ACSM, ACE).

  • First aid and CPR certification.

  • Certification in physical education or sports coaching may be preferred.

Work Environment:

  • The role of a Health and Physical Education Lecturer typically takes place within a university or college campus.

  • It includes classroom teaching, lab sessions, practical physical activities, and field trips (for courses such as sports management or outdoor activities).
