Job Title: Lecturer in Nutritional Sciences

Job Overview: A Lecturer in Nutritional Sciences is an academic professional responsible for teaching and conducting research in the field of nutrition and dietetics at a university or higher education institution. This role involves delivering lectures, seminars, and practical sessions on various topics related to nutrition, health, food science, and dietetics. Additionally, the lecturer contributes to research in the field, mentoring students, and supporting curriculum development to ensure that educational content is up-to-date and aligned with current scientific knowledge and industry standards.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Teaching and Instruction:

    • Deliver engaging lectures, seminars, and practical classes in areas such as human nutrition, clinical nutrition, food science, metabolism, dietetics, and public health nutrition.

    • Develop and update course materials, syllabi, and assessments to ensure that content is relevant, current, and aligned with the latest research and industry trends.

    • Conduct practical sessions in laboratories or clinics, guiding students through hands-on activities that involve nutritional assessment, dietary analysis, and food preparation.

    • Evaluate student performance through assignments, exams, presentations, and other assessments, providing timely and constructive feedback to foster learning.

  2. Research and Scholarly Activities:

    • Conduct original research in the field of nutritional sciences, focusing on areas such as metabolic diseases, clinical nutrition, food security, dietary patterns, or public health nutrition.

    • Publish research findings in reputable academic journals, books, and conferences.

    • Stay updated on emerging trends and advances in nutritional sciences, integrating new knowledge into teaching and research.

    • Seek research funding and collaborate with academic colleagues, industry professionals, and health organizations to support and advance research projects.

  3. Student Mentorship and Support:

    • Advise and mentor undergraduate and graduate students, providing guidance on academic matters, research projects, career pathways, and internships.

    • Support students with research proposals, thesis writing, and professional development.

    • Encourage and assist students in gaining practical experience through internships, work placements, or research opportunities within the field of nutrition.

    • Foster a supportive, inclusive learning environment that encourages critical thinking, inquiry, and collaboration.

  4. Curriculum Development and Improvement:

    • Contribute to the development, review, and enhancement of the nutrition curriculum to ensure it meets the evolving needs of students and aligns with industry and academic standards.

    • Incorporate new teaching strategies, educational technologies, and innovative methodologies into course design and delivery.

    • Work with other faculty members and departments to integrate interdisciplinary approaches and ensure that students are equipped with a broad understanding of nutrition science.

  5. Community Engagement and Outreach:

    • Build relationships with local healthcare providers, public health agencies, and industry professionals to facilitate student internships, research collaborations, and community outreach programs.

    • Participate in initiatives to raise awareness of nutrition and health-related issues in the community, such as workshops, health fairs, and public seminars.

    • Contribute to the development of public health campaigns or educational materials aimed at promoting healthy eating and lifestyle choices.

  6. Administrative and Service Duties:

    • Participate in departmental meetings, faculty committees, and university service activities.

    • Assist with the accreditation process, program reviews, and quality assurance initiatives for nutrition programs.

    • Contribute to the academic development of the department through leadership in research, curriculum design, and student engagement activities.

Skills and Qualifications:

  • Education: A master’s degree or Ph.D. in Nutritional Sciences, Dietetics, Food Science, Public Health Nutrition, or a closely related field is required. A Ph.D. is typically preferred for those seeking a permanent academic position.

  • Experience:

    • Prior teaching experience at the university or college level is preferred.

    • Research experience in nutrition or a related field, with a record of publications in peer-reviewed journals or conferences.

    • Clinical experience or practical work in nutrition or dietetics is highly valued.

  • Skills:

    • Strong knowledge of nutritional science, including human metabolism, food chemistry, clinical nutrition, and public health nutrition.
