Job Overview: The Montessori Teacher is responsible for creating and maintaining a supportive and engaging learning environment for students, following Montessori principles and methods. The teacher will guide and support the development of students in a way that fosters independence, self-direction, and a love for learning. The ideal candidate will be passionate about the Montessori philosophy and committed to nurturing the intellectual, social, emotional, and physical growth of children.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Instruction:

    • Design and implement Montessori-inspired lesson plans that meet the developmental needs and interests of each child.
    • Create a classroom environment that encourages self-directed learning, exploration, and discovery.
    • Guide children individually and in small groups, fostering a love for learning through hands-on experiences and activities.
    • Provide age-appropriate lessons in a range of subjects including language, mathematics, science, geography, and art, using Montessori materials.
    • Respect the child’s developmental pace, providing a balance between freedom and structure within the classroom.
  • Classroom Management:

    • Maintain a calm, orderly, and welcoming classroom environment that aligns with Montessori principles.
    • Set clear expectations for behavior and guide children in making positive choices through modeling and gentle redirection.
    • Foster a sense of responsibility and independence in students through daily routines, materials organization, and clean-up processes.
    • Ensure that students feel safe, respected, and supported in their learning and personal development.
  • Observation & Assessment:

    • Continuously observe and assess each child’s progress, interests, and developmental needs.
    • Document and maintain detailed records of children’s progress and areas for growth.
    • Communicate regularly with parents/guardians about their child’s development, progress, and achievements.
    • Adjust teaching strategies and classroom activities based on observations and assessments to meet the evolving needs of each child.
  • Individualized Learning:

    • Create personalized learning experiences that align with each child’s interests, abilities, and developmental stage.
    • Foster a growth mindset by encouraging self-reflection, goal-setting, and independent problem-solving.
    • Support children’s emotional, social, and cognitive development through meaningful one-on-one interactions and group work.
  • Collaboration:

    • Collaborate with other Montessori teachers and staff to create a cohesive, supportive learning environment across the school.
    • Participate in parent-teacher meetings, school events, and professional development activities.
    • Work closely with the school leadership to ensure that Montessori principles are upheld in the classroom and school community.
  • Professional Development:

    • Stay up-to-date with Montessori teaching methods, new materials, and best practices in early childhood education.
    • Participate in ongoing professional development opportunities, including Montessori training, conferences, and workshops.
    • Reflect on teaching practices and seek opportunities for growth and improvement.

Qualifications:

  • Montessori teaching certification (AMS, AMI, or equivalent) for the appropriate age level (required).
  • Bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education, Child Development, or a related field (preferred).
  • Experience working with young children in a Montessori classroom (preferred).
  • Strong understanding and belief in Montessori educational philosophy and methods.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team setting.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to work effectively with children, parents, and colleagues.
  • Patience, empathy, and a passion for fostering the intellectual and personal growth of children.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to stand, walk, and move around the classroom for extended periods.
  • Ability to assist children with various activities, including sitting on the floor and helping with physical tasks.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 20 lbs (for example, classroom materials or books).

Working Conditions:

  • Full-time position, typically Monday to Friday, during the school year.
  • Occasional evening or weekend work may be required for parent-teacher conferences, school events, or professional development.
