Nursing Instructor

Position Summary:
The Nursing Instructor is responsible for teaching and mentoring nursing students in the classroom, laboratory, and clinical settings. The role includes delivering theoretical and practical nursing education to prepare students for professional practice in healthcare settings. This includes developing course materials, conducting lectures, providing hands-on learning experiences, assessing student performance, and fostering an environment that promotes student engagement and success. Additionally, the Nursing Instructor will engage in professional development, research, and service to the nursing department and the academic institution.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Teaching and Course Delivery:
    • Teach undergraduate and/or graduate courses in nursing, including theoretical lectures, clinical practice, and laboratory sessions.
    • Develop, update, and implement course syllabi, instructional materials, and assessments that align with program goals and accrediting body standards.
    • Use a variety of teaching methods, such as lectures, demonstrations, case studies, simulations, and clinical placements, to meet the learning needs of students.
    • Foster a collaborative and supportive learning environment that encourages student participation, inquiry, and critical thinking.
    • Supervise students during clinical rotations and laboratory activities, ensuring that they apply theoretical knowledge in real-world healthcare settings.
  2. Student Assessment and Feedback:
    • Design and administer exams, quizzes, assignments, and clinical evaluations to assess student progress and performance.
    • Provide timely, constructive feedback on assignments, practicals, and exams, helping students to improve their skills and understanding.
    • Monitor student attendance and engagement in both classroom and clinical settings, and provide additional support or intervention when needed.
    • Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of student performance, including grades, attendance, and clinical evaluations.
  3. Clinical Supervision:
    • Supervise and mentor nursing students during clinical placements, ensuring that they meet clinical objectives and adhere to professional standards.
    • Evaluate student performance in clinical settings, providing feedback and guidance to help students improve their clinical skills and knowledge.
    • Work closely with healthcare facilities and clinical staff to ensure that students receive quality learning experiences in a variety of clinical environments.
    • Monitor the safety and well-being of students during clinical practice, ensuring that safety protocols are followed.
  4. Curriculum Development and Improvement:
    • Contribute to the development and evaluation of the nursing curriculum, ensuring that it meets the needs of students and aligns with the latest nursing practices and accreditation standards.
    • Update course content, teaching strategies, and clinical experiences to reflect current trends and evidence-based practices in nursing.
    • Participate in department meetings and collaborate with colleagues to improve program offerings, teaching methods, and student outcomes.
  5. Professional Development and Research:
    • Engage in ongoing professional development to stay current with advancements in nursing practice, education, and healthcare.
    • Pursue opportunities for research and scholarly activity in nursing education, clinical practice, or healthcare management.
    • Present research findings at conferences, publish in peer-reviewed journals, and contribute to the advancement of the nursing profession.
    • Stay informed about regulatory changes, accreditation standards, and developments in the healthcare industry that impact nursing education.
  6. Advising and Mentoring:
    • Serve as an academic advisor for nursing students, providing guidance on course selection, career planning, and professional development.
    • Offer mentorship to students, supporting their academic and personal growth as they transition into the nursing profession.
    • Encourage students to participate in extracurricular activities, nursing organizations, and professional development opportunities.
  7. Service to the Institution and Community:
    • Contribute to department and university committees, working on initiatives to improve the nursing program and student outcomes.
    • Participate in institutional and community service activities, representing the nursing program and supporting the mission of the college or university.
    • Collaborate with healthcare organizations, professional associations, and community groups to enhance the nursing program’s visibility and impact.
  8. Administrative Responsibilities:
    • Complete necessary administrative tasks, such as preparing reports, maintaining student records, and submitting grades in a timely manner.
    • Assist in the evaluation and accreditation processes for the nursing program, ensuring that the program meets all required standards.
    • Support the department in recruitment and retention efforts for nursing students.

Qualifications:

  • Education:
    • A Master’s degree in Nursing (MSN) is required. A Doctoral degree in Nursing (DNP or Ph.D.) is preferred, especially for positions at the graduate level.
    • Current, active Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state or region of employment.
  • Experience:
    • A minimum of 2-3 years of clinical nursing experience is required, with experience in a specific nursing specialty preferred.
    • Previous teaching experience in nursing or a related field is preferred, but not always required.
    • Experience in clinical education or supervising nursing students in healthcare settings is desirable.
  • Skills:
    • Strong clinical and theoretical knowledge of nursing practices, healthcare systems, and patient care.
    • Ability to teach, mentor, and guide students through complex nursing concepts and hands-on skills.
    • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
    • Proficiency with technology and instructional tools, including learning management systems (LMS), simulations, and digital health tools.
    • Ability to assess student progress and provide constructive feedback.
