School Nurse

Job Summary:

A School Nurse is responsible for providing healthcare services to students, managing their physical and emotional well-being, and responding to medical emergencies. They play a critical role in promoting a safe and healthy school environment, managing student health records, administering medications, and collaborating with parents, teachers, and school staff to ensure the health and safety of students.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Health Care and Medical Support:

  • Provide first aid and emergency care to students and staff as needed, including treating injuries, administering medications, and managing chronic conditions (e.g., asthma, diabetes).
  • Assess students for symptoms of illness or injury and determine appropriate care or referral to a healthcare provider.
  • Administer prescribed medications and treatments as authorized by a physician, ensuring proper documentation and compliance with medical orders.
  • Maintain a safe environment by monitoring for potential health risks, including allergies, communicable diseases, and safety hazards.

2. Health Screenings and Record Keeping:

  • Conduct routine health screenings, including vision, hearing, and growth assessments, as required by school health guidelines.
  • Maintain accurate health records for all students, including immunization records, medical histories, and reports of injuries or illnesses.
  • Monitor and update individual health plans for students with chronic health conditions, in collaboration with parents and healthcare providers.
  • Ensure confidentiality and privacy of student health information, complying with legal requirements such as HIPAA.

3. Health Education and Promotion:

  • Educate students and staff about health-related topics such as nutrition, exercise, hygiene, mental health, and disease prevention.
  • Provide counseling to students on health-related matters, including emotional well-being, stress management, and healthy lifestyle choices.
  • Promote and implement school health programs aimed at improving student health and wellness, such as vaccination drives, anti-smoking campaigns, and nutrition education.

4. Collaboration and Communication:

  • Communicate regularly with parents/guardians regarding students’ health status, treatment plans, and any health concerns.
  • Collaborate with teachers, school administrators, and other staff members to address student health needs and promote overall well-being.
  • Serve as a liaison between the school and external healthcare providers, ensuring continuity of care for students with specific medical conditions.

5. Emergency Response and Planning:

  • Develop and implement emergency health plans for students with chronic medical conditions or special health needs.
  • Respond to medical emergencies during school hours, including coordinating with local healthcare providers or emergency services if needed.
  • Participate in the creation of school-wide emergency protocols for situations such as natural disasters or medical outbreaks (e.g., flu or COVID-19).

6. Mental Health Support:

  • Recognize signs of mental health issues such as anxiety, depression, or stress in students and provide initial support or referrals to mental health professionals.
  • Provide a supportive and empathetic presence to students who may be experiencing personal or emotional difficulties.

Qualifications:

  • Education: A Registered Nurse (RN) or Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) with a valid nursing license.
  • Certification: CPR and First Aid certification required; additional certifications in school health services or pediatric nursing may be preferred.
  • Experience: Previous experience as a nurse, preferably in a school setting or pediatric healthcare, is beneficial but not mandatory.

  • Communication: Strong verbal and written communication skills to interact effectively with students, parents, and school staff.
