Senior Education Counselor

Job Summary:
The Senior Education Counselor is responsible for providing expert advice and guidance to students in educational and career planning. This role involves assessing students’ academic and personal needs, helping them set goals, and supporting them in navigating educational challenges. The Senior Education Counselor works closely with students, parents, school staff, and external agencies to ensure that students receive personalized advice, resources, and opportunities to help them achieve their academic and professional aspirations.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Student Counseling & Guidance:
    • Provide one-on-one counseling sessions to students regarding their academic, personal, and career development.
    • Assess students’ interests, skills, and academic performance to help them set realistic educational and career goals.
    • Offer guidance on course selection, academic progression, and extracurricular activities that align with students’ goals and abilities.
    • Advise students on post-secondary options, including college, university, vocational programs, apprenticeships, and employment opportunities.
    • Provide support for students facing personal or academic challenges, and refer them to appropriate resources when needed.
  2. Career Counseling & Planning:
    • Help students understand potential career paths based on their skills, interests, and qualifications.
    • Assist students in preparing for internships, scholarships, and job placements by offering advice on resumes, interviews, and networking.
    • Organize career fairs, workshops, and guest speaker events to expose students to different professions and career paths.
    • Support students with applying to universities or other institutions, including guidance on the application process, entrance exams, and scholarship opportunities.
  3. Academic Support:
    • Monitor and assess students’ academic progress and intervene when academic performance falls below expectations.
    • Collaborate with teachers, administrators, and parents to develop action plans for students who are struggling academically.
    • Provide guidance on effective study skills, time management, and overcoming academic challenges.
    • Help students plan and adjust their academic schedules to meet graduation and post-secondary requirements.
  4. Program Development & Implementation:
    • Design and implement educational and career development programs and workshops that address the needs of students.
    • Stay updated on trends in education, career pathways, and higher education requirements to provide accurate and current advice.
    • Conduct assessments to measure the effectiveness of counseling programs and make improvements as needed.
  5. Collaboration & Communication:
    • Work closely with parents, teachers, and other school staff to support student success.
    • Communicate effectively with external organizations such as universities, scholarship bodies, and career agencies to provide students with up-to-date information on available opportunities.
    • Maintain confidential records and reports related to student progress, counseling sessions, and academic planning.
    • Facilitate communication between students and other support staff, such as academic tutors, special education professionals, and behavioral counselors.
  6. Professional Development:
    • Attend professional workshops, seminars, and conferences to enhance counseling skills and stay informed about the latest trends in education and career counseling.
    • Engage in continuous self-reflection and seek feedback to improve counseling practices.
    • Supervise and mentor junior counselors or interns, providing guidance and support for their professional growth.
  7. Administrative & Reporting:
    • Maintain accurate and confidential student records, including counseling session notes, academic progress reports, and career assessments.
    • Prepare and submit regular reports on student counseling activities, program evaluations, and student outcomes to school leadership.
    • Coordinate the delivery of standardized tests and college entrance exams, and provide guidance on test preparation.
  8. Crisis Intervention & Support:
    • Provide emotional support to students experiencing stress, anxiety, or personal crises, and guide them to appropriate resources as necessary.
    • Participate in school crisis management plans and provide support during difficult or emergency situations.

Qualifications:

  • Education:
    • Master’s degree in Counseling, Psychology, Education, or a related field.
    • Relevant certifications or licenses (e.g., Licensed Professional Counselor, National Certified Counselor, etc.) may be required, depending on local regulations.
  • Experience:
    • Minimum of [5-7] years of experience in educational counseling or a related field, with a proven track record of success in guiding students through academic and career planning.
    • Experience working in an educational environment, preferably with secondary or post-secondary students.
  • Skills & Competencies:
    • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to establish rapport with students, parents, and school staff.
    • In-depth knowledge of educational systems, college admissions processes, scholarship opportunities, and career counseling resources.
    • Excellent problem-solving and conflict-resolution skills.
    • Ability to create a supportive and encouraging environment for students facing academic or personal challenges.
    • Proficiency with counseling software, student management systems, and Microsoft Office Suite.
    • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Working Conditions:
