Senior Student Counsellors

Job Summary:
The Senior Student Counselor is responsible for providing advanced counseling services to students, helping them navigate academic, social, emotional, and personal challenges. This role involves leading a team of counselors, overseeing student counseling programs, and developing strategies to support student well-being and success. The Senior Student Counselor works closely with school leadership, parents, teachers, and external resources to create a holistic support system for students.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Counseling and Support:
    • Provide individual and group counseling to students facing academic, emotional, behavioral, and social challenges.
    • Support students in managing stress, anxiety, depression, relationship issues, and other mental health concerns that may affect their academic performance and well-being.
    • Offer career and academic guidance, helping students set realistic goals, make informed decisions, and develop strategies for success.
    • Address crisis situations, providing immediate support and intervention, and connecting students with additional resources as needed.
  2. Leadership and Team Management:
    • Lead and supervise a team of student counselors, providing mentorship, guidance, and professional development opportunities.
    • Develop and implement counseling programs, ensuring that they are aligned with the school’s mission, values, and student needs.
    • Coordinate and oversee counseling services, ensuring that all students receive the necessary support and intervention in a timely manner.
    • Promote a collaborative approach to counseling, encouraging open communication between counselors, teachers, and administrators to ensure comprehensive student support.
  3. Program Development and Implementation:
    • Design, implement, and evaluate school-wide programs focused on mental health, academic support, college and career readiness, and personal development.
    • Lead workshops, seminars, and presentations for students, parents, and staff on relevant topics such as mental health awareness, study skills, career planning, and conflict resolution.
    • Organize group counseling sessions, peer support programs, and extracurricular activities that promote emotional and social growth.
    • Work closely with other departments (e.g., academic, extracurricular) to ensure that student support programs are integrated into the broader school culture.
  4. Collaboration and Advocacy:
    • Collaborate with teachers, administrators, and parents to identify students in need of counseling services and to develop individualized support plans.
    • Act as an advocate for students, ensuring they have access to the resources they need, including academic accommodations, mental health services, and extracurricular activities.
    • Participate in student support meetings, helping to create and implement plans to address academic, behavioral, or emotional issues.
    • Work with community organizations and outside agencies to refer students to additional mental health services, tutoring, or other support systems.
  5. Data Management and Reporting:
    • Maintain accurate and confidential records of counseling sessions, interventions, and progress reports.
    • Monitor and track student outcomes, providing feedback to students, parents, and staff regarding progress and areas of concern.
    • Analyze data from assessments, surveys, and student feedback to evaluate the effectiveness of counseling programs and identify areas for improvement.
    • Prepare reports for school leadership and stakeholders regarding counseling activities, student well-being, and overall program impact.
  6. Professional Development and Research:
    • Stay up to date with the latest counseling techniques, mental health practices, and educational trends to provide the best possible support to students.
    • Attend professional development workshops, conferences, and seminars to continually improve counseling practices and stay informed about current issues facing students.
    • Encourage and facilitate ongoing training for the counseling team, promoting a culture of continuous improvement.
  7. Crisis Management and Support:
    • Provide crisis intervention support, offering immediate counseling to students dealing with personal trauma, loss, or mental health crises.
    • Develop and implement crisis management protocols, ensuring that students are supported and connected with appropriate resources in emergency situations.
    • Work with school leadership to manage critical incidents, providing emotional support to affected students, families, and staff.
  8. Parental and Community Engagement:
    • Maintain regular communication with parents regarding their child’s progress, counseling sessions, and any concerns that may arise.
    • Offer parenting workshops and resources to support families in addressing academic, emotional, or behavioral challenges.
    • Build relationships with community organizations, mental health professionals, and local resources to create a comprehensive support network for students.

Qualifications:

  • Education:
    • Master’s degree in Counseling, Psychology, Social Work, or a related field.
    • Relevant certifications or licensure (e.g., Licensed Professional Counselor, Licensed Clinical Social Worker) as required by local regulations.
  • Experience:
    • Extensive experience in student counseling, with at least [X] years working in an educational setting.
    • Proven experience in leading counseling teams, providing supervision, and developing counseling programs.
    • Experience working with students from diverse backgrounds, including students with special needs, emotional challenges, and academic difficulties.
