Senior Teacher

Job Summary:

A Senior Teacher is an experienced educator who plays a leadership role within the teaching team. In addition to teaching, the Senior Teacher is responsible for mentoring junior staff, overseeing curriculum development, and ensuring that educational standards are upheld. They work closely with school administration to improve teaching strategies, student outcomes, and the overall learning environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Teaching and Curriculum Delivery:

    • Plan, prepare, and deliver high-quality lessons that align with the curriculum and educational standards.
    • Teach students in a specific subject area (e.g., Mathematics, English, Science) across different grade levels.
    • Use a variety of teaching methods and resources to engage students and accommodate diverse learning styles.
    • Assess and monitor student progress through assignments, tests, projects, and other forms of evaluation.
  2. Mentoring and Supporting Junior Teachers:

    • Provide guidance and mentorship to less experienced teachers, sharing best practices and teaching strategies.
    • Assist in the professional development of junior staff by offering feedback, support, and facilitating collaborative teaching practices.
    • Lead or participate in staff meetings, curriculum planning sessions, and professional development workshops.
  3. Curriculum Development and Review:

    • Collaborate with other senior teachers and school leadership to develop, review, and update the curriculum.
    • Ensure that the curriculum is comprehensive, relevant, and aligned with national or regional educational standards.
    • Adapt the curriculum to meet the needs of diverse learners, incorporating a variety of instructional methods and materials.
  4. Classroom Management and Student Engagement:

    • Maintain a positive, disciplined, and engaging classroom environment that supports student learning.
    • Implement effective classroom management strategies to ensure that students are focused, motivated, and respectful.
    • Create a supportive learning environment that fosters student independence, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills.
  5. Assessment and Reporting:

    • Monitor and assess student performance regularly, providing feedback and implementing intervention strategies when necessary.
    • Prepare and submit progress reports, grading, and evaluations for students.
    • Track student performance and identify patterns or issues that need to be addressed to ensure academic success.
  6. Collaborative Leadership and School Development:

    • Collaborate with school leadership, other senior teachers, and departments to improve school policies, teaching methods, and student outcomes.
    • Contribute to the development of school-wide initiatives, activities, and events that enhance the learning experience.
    • Take an active role in school committees or extracurricular activities to support the school community.
  7. Parent and Community Engagement:

    • Communicate regularly with parents regarding their child’s academic progress, behavior, and overall well-being.
    • Attend parent-teacher conferences and engage in discussions about student development and areas for improvement.
    • Involve parents and the community in school activities, creating a partnership that supports students’ learning.
  8. Professional Development:

    • Stay updated on the latest educational trends, teaching methods, and curriculum developments.
    • Attend workshops, seminars, and conferences to continuously improve teaching practices.
    • Reflect on personal teaching performance and seek opportunities for growth through feedback and self-improvement.
  9. Administrative Duties:

    • Assist with administrative tasks such as maintaining student records, preparing materials for classes, and completing required reports.
    • Ensure that educational policies and school regulations are followed in the classroom and across school activities.
    • Contribute to the organization of school events, examinations, and other academic-related activities.

Qualifications:

  • A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Education or a relevant subject area (e.g., Mathematics, English, Science).
  • Teaching certification or licensure (depending on regional requirements).
  • Significant teaching experience, typically 5+ years, with a strong record of student outcomes and classroom management.
  • Familiarity with curriculum development, student assessment methods, and educational best practices.

Skills and Competencies:

  • Strong leadership and interpersonal skills, with the ability to mentor and support colleagues.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, to engage with students, parents, and staff.
