Sr. Education Counselor

Job Summary:

The Senior Education Counselor plays a pivotal role in guiding students through their academic and career decision-making processes. This individual will provide expert advice on educational pathways, course selection, career development, and help students set and achieve personal and academic goals. In addition, the Senior Education Counselor will mentor junior counselors, develop counseling programs, and collaborate with faculty and parents to ensure students’ academic and emotional well-being. This position requires an experienced and empathetic counselor who is committed to supporting students in their educational journeys.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Individual Counseling:
    • Provide one-on-one counseling to students on academic planning, career goals, college applications, and personal development.
    • Help students assess their academic performance, interests, and strengths to develop personalized educational plans.
    • Assist students in setting achievable academic, personal, and professional goals.
    • Support students in making informed decisions about their education, such as selecting courses, choosing majors, or navigating career exploration.
    • Address academic challenges, personal concerns, and social-emotional issues that may impact a student’s educational success.
  2. Career Guidance and Planning:
    • Offer expert advice on career exploration and planning, helping students align their education with future career paths.
    • Provide guidance on internships, apprenticeships, and vocational training opportunities.
    • Assist students with job search strategies, resume writing, interview preparation, and career networking.
    • Organize career fairs, workshops, and guest speaker events to expose students to various career options and industry professionals.
  3. College and University Advising:
    • Guide students through the college application process, including selecting suitable colleges or universities, preparing application materials, and meeting deadlines.
    • Advise students on scholarship and financial aid opportunities, ensuring they understand eligibility requirements and application processes.
    • Help students prepare for entrance exams and interviews, as well as review application essays and personal statements.
    • Assist students in making decisions about which institutions to apply to based on their academic, personal, and financial needs.
  4. Group Counseling and Workshops:
    • Lead group counseling sessions and workshops focused on topics such as study skills, time management, stress management, college application processes, and career readiness.
    • Develop and implement educational programs aimed at enhancing students’ academic and emotional well-being.
    • Conduct orientation sessions for new students and families to ensure they are familiar with academic expectations and available resources.
  5. Mentorship and Supervision:
    • Supervise and mentor junior counselors or support staff, providing guidance, training, and professional development opportunities.
    • Foster a collaborative environment among the counseling team to share resources, strategies, and best practices.
    • Lead the development and improvement of counseling programs and services for the institution or school.
    • Provide feedback and evaluations of junior counselors, helping them improve their counseling techniques and student engagement.
  6. Collaboration with Faculty and Parents:
    • Work closely with teachers and school administrators to monitor students’ academic progress and provide necessary support when academic difficulties arise.
    • Maintain regular communication with parents regarding their child’s academic development, counseling needs, and any issues affecting their success.
    • Organize and participate in parent-teacher conferences, community outreach, and meetings to discuss student progress and address any concerns.
  7. Program Development and Evaluation:
    • Design and implement counseling programs and initiatives to address students’ academic, career, and personal development needs.
    • Regularly assess the effectiveness of counseling services and programs, making adjustments as needed to improve outcomes for students.
    • Keep up-to-date with educational trends, college admissions processes, and career opportunities to provide the best possible advice to students.
    • Organize events such as career days, college visits, and alumni networking opportunities.
  8. Record Keeping and Reporting:
    • Maintain accurate records of student counseling sessions, progress reports, and case notes in compliance with institutional policies and confidentiality standards.
    • Prepare reports and provide data on student progress, counseling activities, and program outcomes for school administrators or other stakeholders.
  9. Crisis Intervention and Support:
    • Provide support during times of student crisis, including academic, personal, or family issues that impact students’ ability to focus on their education.
    • Collaborate with external professionals such as psychologists, social workers, or mental health specialists to address students’ emotional well-being and behavioral concerns.
    • Offer crisis counseling, resources, and referrals to appropriate services when necessary.

Required Qualifications:

  • Education: Master’s degree in Counseling, Psychology, Education, or a related field.
  • Experience: A minimum of 5 years of experience as an educational counselor or academic advisor, with at least 2 years in a senior or leadership role.
  • Certifications: Counseling certification or licensure (depending on location), or the ability to obtain certification.
  • Skills:
    • In-depth knowledge of the educational system, college admissions processes, and career development.
    • Strong interpersonal, communication, and listening skills.
    • Ability to build trust and rapport with students, parents, and staff.
    • Excellent organizational and time-management skills.
    • Familiarity with educational software, career assessment tools, and online application platforms.
    • Ability to work effectively both independently and in a collaborative team environment.
    • Expertise in handling sensitive student issues with professionalism, confidentiality, and empathy.
