Teacher – English

Position Summary:
An English Teacher is responsible for delivering high-quality instruction in English language arts, including reading, writing, grammar, literature, and communication skills. The role involves designing and implementing lesson plans, assessing student progress, fostering a positive learning environment, and promoting literacy skills. The English Teacher works with students to enhance their critical thinking, language proficiency, and analytical abilities, while preparing them for academic success and lifelong learning.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Instruction and Lesson Planning:
    • Design and deliver engaging lessons that align with the curriculum standards and objectives for English language arts.
    • Teach a variety of topics, including literature, composition, grammar, vocabulary, reading comprehension, and oral communication.
    • Differentiate instruction to meet the diverse learning needs of students, including those with special needs, English language learners, and advanced learners.
    • Integrate technology, multimedia, and digital tools to enhance learning and student engagement.
  2. Student Assessment and Progress Monitoring:
    • Create and administer assessments, quizzes, projects, and exams to evaluate student understanding and progress.
    • Use formative and summative assessments to track student achievement and adjust instruction as needed.
    • Provide timely, constructive feedback on assignments and assessments to promote student growth.
    • Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of student performance, including grades, attendance, and behavioral notes.
  3. Classroom Management:
    • Establish and maintain a positive, respectful, and productive classroom environment that promotes student engagement and participation.
    • Set clear expectations for student behavior and create a structured classroom routine.
    • Address classroom disruptions and behavioral issues using effective and proactive classroom management strategies.
    • Foster a safe, inclusive, and supportive environment that encourages learning and respect for diverse perspectives.
  4. Student Support and Mentorship:
    • Provide individual or small-group support for students who need additional assistance with reading, writing, or language skills.
    • Offer guidance and mentorship to students to help them develop strong study habits, organizational skills, and self-confidence.
    • Communicate regularly with parents and guardians about student progress, behavior, and areas for improvement.
  5. Curriculum Development and Collaboration:
    • Collaborate with other English teachers and academic staff to develop and refine curriculum materials and teaching strategies.
    • Participate in department meetings, professional development workshops, and school-wide initiatives to stay current with best practices in education.
    • Contribute to the ongoing improvement of the English program by suggesting new materials, resources, and teaching techniques.
  6. Encouraging Critical Thinking and Literacy:
    • Encourage students to think critically and analytically about texts and ideas, fostering discussion and debate on literature, themes, and real-world issues.
    • Promote strong writing skills through various forms of composition, including essays, research papers, creative writing, and persuasive writing.
    • Help students develop their public speaking and presentation skills, enabling them to communicate effectively in both academic and social settings.
  7. Professional Development and Reflection:
    • Engage in continuous professional development by attending conferences, taking courses, and participating in workshops focused on teaching practices, language arts, and educational technology.
    • Reflect on teaching practices and outcomes to identify areas for growth and improvement.
    • Maintain awareness of the latest trends in English education, including changes to curriculum standards and educational tools.
  8. School Participation and Extracurricular Involvement:
    • Participate in school events, meetings, and committees as needed, contributing to the overall success of the school community.
    • Support extracurricular activities such as writing clubs, book clubs, or drama productions when applicable.

Qualifications:

  • Education:
    • A Bachelor’s degree in English, English Education, or a related field is required. A Master’s degree in Education or English is preferred.
  • Experience:
    • Prior experience teaching English at the secondary or post-secondary level is preferred but not required.
    • Experience with differentiated instruction and assessment practices is a plus.
    • Familiarity with a variety of literary genres, teaching methods, and educational technologies is beneficial.
  • Skills:
    • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to explain complex concepts in an accessible manner.
    • Ability to engage and inspire students of diverse abilities and backgrounds.
    • Excellent classroom management skills, with the ability to foster a positive and productive learning environment.
    • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
    • Proficiency in educational technology, such as learning management systems (LMS), multimedia tools, and digital resources for literacy development.
