Assistant Professor

Job Overview:

The Assistant Professor is an early-career faculty member who is responsible for teaching undergraduate and/or graduate courses, conducting research, and contributing to the academic mission of the department and institution. The role requires a balance between teaching, research, and service, as well as a commitment to advancing knowledge in the relevant field of study.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Teaching and Instruction:

    • Design and deliver lectures, seminars, and tutorials in the subject area.

    • Develop and update course syllabi, materials, assignments, and exams.

    • Assess and grade student performance fairly and promptly.

    • Engage students through active learning techniques, discussions, and practical applications of the subject matter.

    • Provide academic advising and mentoring to students, offering guidance on academic and career development.

    • Maintain office hours to provide additional student support.

  • Research and Scholarship:

    • Conduct independent research in the academic field, with the goal of publishing in peer-reviewed journals and other scholarly outlets.

    • Participate in research projects and collaborate with faculty, students, and other researchers.

    • Present research at academic conferences and professional meetings.

    • Seek external funding for research through grants and partnerships.

  • Curriculum Development:

    • Contribute to the development and review of the curriculum in the department.

    • Ensure that courses are updated with the latest research, theories, and technological advancements.

    • Support the development of new academic programs or courses when needed.

  • Service and Professional Development:

    • Participate in departmental meetings, university committees, and other institutional activities.

    • Engage in professional development opportunities, such as attending conferences, workshops, and continuing education programs.

    • Contribute to the broader academic and professional community through outreach, networking, and engagement with external stakeholders.

  • Student Engagement:

    • Advise and mentor students on academic matters, including research projects, career paths, and further study.

    • Supervise student research, theses, and dissertations at the undergraduate and graduate levels.

Qualifications:

  • Education: A Ph.D. or terminal degree in the relevant academic field (or near completion if ABD – All But Dissertation).

  • Experience:

    • Experience in teaching at the undergraduate or graduate level is preferred but not always required.

    • A proven record of, or potential for, high-quality research and publication.

  • Skills:

    • Strong communication and presentation skills.

    • Ability to engage and inspire students in the classroom.

    • Strong research skills, including knowledge of research methods and academic writing.

    • Ability to collaborate with faculty, students, and external partners on research and academic initiatives.

    • Organizational and time-management skills to balance teaching, research, and service duties.

Work Environment:

The Assistant Professor will work in an academic setting, usually within a university or college. The role requires flexibility to manage teaching schedules, attend departmental meetings, conduct research, and provide student support. The Assistant Professor may be expected to teach both undergraduate and graduate courses and may engage in online or hybrid teaching formats depending on institutional needs.
